Font limit?

Does anybody know why windows has a font limit. Im running windows 98se and I was installing some fonts the other day and at number 989 it said that windows had reached the font limit, and I couldn't install anymore. The next day though I checked my font folder and I now have 995. Why exactly is it that windows has a font limit and why can't some programs (like microsoft word) function with more than a certain number of fonts installed. Whenever I open Microsoft works it display a message saying I need to reduce the number of fonts on my machine or some won't show up correctly. Also I have installed some fonts on a machine running xp and I have close to 2000 on that machine.

I've noticed that many of the fonts are just variations of each other. Such as Arial, Arial Bold, Arial Underline, etc. You can usually do bold, italic and underline in almost any program that uses fonts, so these variations are not really aboslutely necessary.

Setfree: With nearly 1000 fonts you must know. Where I can get Graphite Light ? Been looking everywhere. Had it on an old PC but can't remember where it came from.
Thanks,
Chris.
