Unhappy Can't start program from Start Menu

When I try to start MGI Photosuite lll by clicking Start>Programs>MGI Photosuite lll, the Internet Properties window appears instead of the program starting. Am using Win 98SE. Any help will be appreciated as my wife likes this program to work with her photos.

Hi beerman,

Do the other programs start up okay from the Start button?

Could be the link to the MGI Photosuite lll program got messed up. Can you start the program up if you go into Windows Explorer, find the program folder and double click on the .exe file?

Right click on the taskbar and choose Properties. Click on the Start Menu Programs tab and click Remove. Find the link to the MGI Photosuite III and remove it. Click on the Add button and navigate to the MGI Photosuite III folder and highlight the program .exe file and click Open. Click Next and highlight where you want the MGI Photosuite III link to go (Programs). Click Next and then make sure the name of the program is how you want it to appear in the Start Menu. Click Finish. Check to see that the link works properly.

Still no luck!

Cricket

Thanks for the fast response, but still have the problem. From Windows Explorer also get Internet Properties. After removing and adding as suggested, also still get Internet Properties window.

Other programs work fine from the Start Menu

Hi beerman,

Sounds like the link got messed up. If other links on your system work OK (making sure you don't have a wide spread problem) then simple delete the offending link, and make a new one.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program to no avail. However, I chose not to delete the files it said were not used by other programs.

Hi beerman,

You still get the Internet Properties box when you double click the MGI Photosuite III executeable in Windows Explorer? That's really messed up. Have you scanned the MGI folder for viruses or trojans?

Don't know what to tell you. I've never heard of anything like this. Did you remove the Registry keys for MGI Photosuite III when you uninstalled the program?

All other start menu items work fine. Get Internet Properties box when double clicking MGI in Windows explorer. Will scan folder for viruses. Being a novice, I don't like to mess with the registry.

Try going to (my computer) C:\Program Files\MGI Photosuite.
Double click the .exe file...does the program open or the internet prop. window?
Is there more than one .exe file in this folder?
Could you be clicking the wrong .exe file??
Try the other files if there are more than one, do any of them open the program??
If so, you've been clicking on the wrong link.
If one of the other files opens the program, that's the one to make a shortcut to in the start menu.
Let me know if what I suspect is true, I'll explain how to make the link on the start menu.....

There are two .exe files, photos~1.exe takes me to internet properties, PS_clean.exe asks if I want to delete temp pslll folder. If I say yes nothing changes.

sounds to me like the program is not fully or correctly installing.
is this a retail program?
I would try to uninstall it with a 3rd party program like uninstaller before reinstalling again.
Can you view the contents of your installation disc? have you tried installing it by double clicking the setup.exe file or does it auto start the install when you put the cd in?
The exe files that you named don't sound like the "main program".
I suspect that for some reason when you run setup, not all of the program is being copied.
I've had problems similar to this...like Cricket mentioned, editing the registry can help to remedy troublesome installs.

OK, here's the latest. I deleted the MGI folder from the registry, found the setup file on the CD and reinstalled. Am still taken to Internet Properties from the start menu.
Program has been installed for about 6 mos. and working fine up until my original post.

is there anything else that happened around this time?
did you add or remove any other software?
have you run a virus scan? (although I doubt this is the problem)
this is so strange, I think a visit to the MGI website to find some tech support there might be in order.
when you say you deleted the MGI "folder" in the registry, did you also check all MGI registry entries? (press f3 after you delete each entry to find the next one)

Roxio had the answer---Internet Explorer Options not set correctly. tools>options>advanced then under multimedia check "show pictures" apply and start Photosuite. All is well again. Thanks to all who responded.
