Reloading Service Packs
My boss just asked us are we reloading SP6 after we change, add, or remove hardware from the PC's. I had to say no. I completely forgot about that "rule of thumb" about re-running the service packs.
For future referrence; does that rule hold true for 2000 and XP? |

no, in 2000 or xp you do not need to re-load service packs after hardware or software changes. if the operating system needs files, it will pull them from the cab files in the service packs.

That's cool. But I don't think that is why they reloaded service packs. I always thought the reloading of service packs was to make sure all those files are up to date.

Actually, you're both kind of right. Service packs should be re-applied after ANY maintenance of a system, not just hardware. If you have added or removed any applications, services, etc. you should re-do the SP's. I know, it's just like backups. We all know we should do them religiously, but ... If a system is becoming flaky and you've done a lot with it lately, maybe it's time to redo the SP's.
The primary purpose of the SP is to ensure the drivers, dll's and other system files are up to date. If you've added or removed software or hardware that is not affected by the SP, then Win2K and XP will pull the correct drivers from the cabs. If, however, the SP does affect the device or software, it will have pulled the outdated version from the cabs. I don't believe the SP updates the contents of the cabs. Therefore, it is necessary to reapply the SP. Hope that helps. The Old Man |

Okay, but how can you be sure it's affecting files that should be reinstalled by the service pack?

There are documents on the MS web site and with the SP that describe the contents and list all the fixes and files included. You can wade through them if you want or just get into the habit of periodically reapplying the SP.
IMHO, it's just easier to reapply the SP any time you do significant maintenance or if the system starts acting up. The Old Man |

from the xp sp1 faq
Q. What has Microsoft done to make deploying Windows XP SP1 easier? A. Based on customer and support feedback, Windows XP was designed to minimize the lifecycle maintenance cost for both small and large customers. Key enhancements to the service pack that ease deployment include: Integrated installation makes it easier to apply and update service packs. IT administrators can create an integrated installation of the Windows XP operating system and Windows XP SP1 on a network distribution share or CD. Windows XP SP1 eliminates the need to reinstall the service pack after installing new system components or devices. |

Well you should. I mean really, what's the big deal. If you can get SP1 on CD, how inconvienet is it? Just run it, walk away, go to the bathroom, come back, reboot, DONE!
