Fixing corrupt registry...
Hey guys,
I just had a pretty serious problem on my machine. I still have not determine the cause. When I booted up my machine today, I got the following blue screen: STOP: c0000218{Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable. My PC would not boot Windows, so this is what I did: 1) I went into the recover console and made a backup copy of "\winnt\system32\config\SOFTWARE". 2) Then I replaced this file with "\winnt\repair\SOFTWARE". 3) Rebooted... No more blue screen. Finally, I am now able to run Windows. The problem is that I lost basically all my applications. My question is... Since I made a copy of the corrupt registry file, is there any way possible that I could fix this registry and re-use it? What are my options? Once again, thanks for any helpful advice. Jim. |

Your apps are still there - you just have to reinstall them in the original location to get them working again.
In the future, it would be prudent to update your repair information frequently so if this happens again, it won't have to go back so far. This is done from the "emergency repair disk" option in Backup. |
