Any way to get XP?
I had intended to borrow a copy of XP home edition to install on my new computer, until I was told that's not going to work as it has to be registered and can't be used by another user. Is there any other way besides forking out the $100 for it?

I would have to say no about that. LEGAL copies only discussed here.

No.
Some people will tell you there are ways to break codes etc. Don't do it. It is illegal and wrong. Instead, shop for the best price. Some of the online vendors like www.newegg.com sometimes sell OEM versions at a reduced price as long as you buy hardware. Newegg's current price is $90 for home and $138 for professional. Must be purchased with hardware. CH Last edited by Computer Hobbyist; 10-29-2002 at 09:40 PM. |

With that question answered, I have another. I'm guessing your copy of XP is registered to Microsoft via the net? So if it can't be used by another person, then I'm guessing it also can't ever be installed again on another of your own systems?

No, that answer would be a yes it can be installed on another computer as long as you transfer the lic from your 1st computer to the 2nd,, I dont how to do it but someone will post with the correct way to transfer the lic. If it is even that much, i think you have to prove that the 1st is completly cleaned from your 1st computer

The rebate at Amazon makes it $79.00 bucks. It's one of those print the rebate out and mail it in things.
Also at that price there's no shipping charge and, as long as you don't live in Cal. , no sales tax. So, if you can live with the rebate thing it's a good deal. I'll be doing it myself later in November. No sales tax in Cal. that bill never passed. Last edited by pam123; 10-29-2002 at 10:38 PM. |

Let me rephrase that question, because I have a feeling this thread might go places we dont allow here at PCMech ..
the thread originator, ATW, would probably like a place where XP Home might be purchased at a reasonable cost We have already beaten license issues and legalities issues into a pulp here. |

If you have a copy of Win98 or ME you could get the XP upgrade cd and do a clean install with it.
The upgrade should be cheap. |
