Virtual memory (Win2K)
OK, I am running Windows 2000 and have 512MB DDR RAM.
Windows is recommending at the moment that my pagefile is 768MB (and has set it, oh so conveniently, to that). Is there really any point in having this wasting 768MB of my 20GB HDD? Opinions please... (Bearing in mind I never use over 400MB RAM) Jim

You're not wasting it. It's a dynamic file, and will grow or shrink as the need arises. If your HD gets full, and needs the space for programs, the pagefile will shrink to accommodate.
You could drop it down some if you really feel it's necessary. Check the pagefile use, by right clicking on the clock, select Task Manager, then go to the Performance tab. See how much pagefile is actually being used (over a period of time), and then set it to a number just above the maximum usage. If it works, don't fix it. |

I usually set the page file to be a static size, because it wastes time to dynamically adjust the size of the file. I monitor swap file usage over time and adjust accordingly. Never have I set it to 150% of my RAM.

Thanks,
I set it to 2 megs, did some stuff (full load etc) and it raised itself to 24MB. I've now set it to 50MB and will see if it raises again This is better than having 770MB gone. Thanks again |
