Pissed Installing Software on XP

I seem to be having a major problem at the moment -

I cannot install any software on my system -

1. From CD the installer starts and then gets to a certain percentage and then drops back to desktop without any error message.

2. Any programs downloaded over the internet with an .exe to install won't even start - the hourglass symbol appears for a few seconds and then disappears.

3.Microsoft updates have a similar problem - When updates are ready to download, I click on the download button and then it doesn't do anything else.

Does anyone have any ideas? Other than a full reinstall?

Hmm not sure about the programs.

As for the Windows Updates, are you sure that your "Cryptographic Services" service is running when you try to do the update? It won't work without it, I believe, but then again you probably wouldn't have even gotten the list of available updates without it running.
(I usually leave it disabled, but enable it when trying to do Windows Updates)

Can you think of anything you did with your system recently that may have messed with it?

As far as I'm aware, I've done nothing to my system - no extra programs or updates, and I'm not into opening up everything and messing with OS files.

It just seemed to start playing up out of the blue.

Hi colbell,

Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.

Hi Cricket,

Done that, nothing found.

Looks like I'm going to have to reinstall, I just found out I can't access system information now.

Do you have a System Restore backup point from before the problem started? If you do, you may not have to reinstall everything.

I tried the system restore feature, and it didn't cure the problem, so I decided to look into it a bit further.

I've found that its my CD rewriter thats developed a fault.
I only found this by trial and error, I decided to swap bits in and out, and luckily I started with the CD Writer as it seemed to be that where the problems seemed to occur, so i swapped it for a generic CD Rom and now my system is working fine.

Thanks for all your input guys.

Hi colbell,

While that appears to be the reason why you couldn't install programs from CDs, it doesn't explain why programs downloaded from the Net wouldn't install.

It could be that you weren't logged on as Administrator.
