Pissed win98 icons not working?!?!?

I recently formatted my compaq presario because it had been infected by an anti-exe virus. i used my quick restore discs because it is the quickest way to get the computer back into working mode. after i got the restore done everytime i boot my computer to win98, the icons on desktop dont work. but then if i run chkdsk thru command prompt, then go back to desktop, the icons magically work again?! what the heck is going on here? is there a fix or should i just totally wipe out this harddrive and to a non-restore win98 install? thanks! -jonezj

Maybe the virus is still there...?

Get yourself a copy of AVG Anti Virus checker (FREE) from www.grisoft.com

. . . Or, you can choose the option for full reformat/reinstall from the Compaq Recovery disk set. That should take care of the virus, too. I would imagine some sort of AntiVirus program came with that Compaq. When you reformat/reinstall with the Recovery Disks, you can go the AntiVirus website for your program and see if you still qualify to download the latest updates for it. If you can't, then AVG is a low-cost option (free) - as Jim pointed out.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. ...if you only partly restored your system, but didn't do anything to delete/disable the virus, then it's probably still there, just as Jim noted]

jonezj,

As Gary says, if you didn't actually format the system the virus is probably still there. Make sure you do that

However, even after a format the virus may STILL be there and you may be forced to do a low-level format or Zero-Write to your HDD. This will definitely remove any virii that are lurking in your system
