Setting IRQ's on XP & Mem Dump
I recently installed a PCTV card on my Asus P4S333C that disabled the Motorola SM56 Internal Modem.
I took it out & uninstalled all features but could not get the modem to recognize a Com port or assign an IRQ. even though I had the original Drivers. I overcame the problem by setting it up on my other drive that has 98SE on it. I then restarted it & ran the drivers again and they were assigned to Com 3 & IRQ 17. Question: How do I assign IRQ's in XP?? How do I safely get rid of the memory dump that is taking up so much room??? Thanks |

Hi Phreddie,
Is the modem working on IRQ 17 in XP? If it is, I would just leave it. That's just the way XP assigns IRQs. ACPI assigns IRQs in XP and this makes it very difficult to reassign them manually. The only two ways I know of changing a device's IRQ is to try the PCI cards in different slots or installing XP as a Standard HAL. This effectively disables ACPI and allows you or the BIOS to allocate resources. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q216251 Also, some mobo BIOSs allow you to assign an IRQ to particular PCI slots. This works well in Win9x, but I've no idea how it would work with ACPI enabled in XP. However you could try it. Last edited by mike breck; 11-08-2002 at 07:14 AM. |

Thanks for your help Mike.
It seems that little is known about setting IRQ's in XP. I have searched all places I know and just had the brain storm to have it assigned to IRQ17 Works Ok except that I have set the Volume of the modem to OFF but it still makes a racket!!! |
