Curious about XP activating...
From my understanding, XP has to be activated and after that can't be installed on any other computer. But how is this done? Obviously the CD can't be marked by your computer so that it is useless. So how does the confirmation of activation go from Microsoft to that CD on your shelf, so that it knows to keep from installing itself on a seperate system?

Once XP is installed on a system it generates a hardware ID which is unique to that system and then sent along with the activation process to MS. If the software is installed upon another system the hardware ID will be different and thus the activation will not be processed.

So, how does it work when you change your motherboard, cpu and video card? I reformatted hard drive to suit new hardware and XP re-activated no problem. Just wondering............

I also just installed my original version of XP home upgrade version on a completely different box and it seems to have activated no problem!

Thanks James. Good info you've given. It does inconvenient users who like to tinker with their hardware.
