Defraag complete, but still fragmented files.
Using the built in deframenter in windows XP I still end up with files not fully defragmented, why does it do this? Is there a way of fully defragmenting, either with the built in ultility or a third party software. Also, I am used to using scandisk, which is not available in XP, but I using chkdsk with the f option, is this the best way of doing it and what is the XP equivalent of the surface scan?.

I think you what you are seeing are fragmented folders in the MFT. The MFT folder can only be defragmented when the computer is not running (ie by using dos). The only program i know of that can fully defrag everything on you're computer is diskeeper workstation which can defrag your Hard Drive before your PC starts up..

chkdsk /r will scan for bad sectors.
Another vote for Diskeeper. The builtin defrag is a crippled version, the commercial version has boot time defrag options, frag guard, "set it and forget it" and more. |
