windows files needed after service pack

I recently downloaded the windows 2000 professional service pack 1 on a friend's computer. After I installed the service pack and rebooted the system a dialog message box popped up and said something to the effect of "Windows Files Needed: Some system files have been replaced with files that are not recognized. Please insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD into your CD-ROM. These files are needed for system stability." Why would this happen with an "update" installation? Anyway I put the CD in and left it in there while performing normal functions on the PC. The hard drive was obviously collecting files because it and the CD-ROM drive were communicating. Any suggestions?
