Recovery Console Prob

Hi guys,

Trying to recover a corrrupted registry thorugh the recovery console after receiving.

"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE"

No probs, I thought, done it before, although this time when it asks me which installation I want to log onto and when I type in "1", the pc just sits there, can't type any more, all I can do is ctrl-alt-delete it. I've tried a diff Xp cd just to rule out a dirty cd but no change(nothing illegal there, I hope?!)

Any tips, suggestions, experiences with this humdinger?!

Cheers.
