How to Stop XP From Intalling Drivers?

Real quick I posted a few days ago regarding an external USB Hard drive/card issue. My system began to crash after installing a USB 2.0 card. I finally took the old card back and traded it in for a maxtor that is working good. However, everytime I reboot, it detects NEC to PCI Enchanced USB Controller. I only want the Maxtor controller to show up. I always have to go in and disable it. Any way I could prevent xp from installing those drivers?

Remove the NEC to PCI Enhanced USB Controller from Device Manager.

I was having similar problems with my video card. When I had Windows98 and ME, I used to use Detonator Destroyer to get rid of all the extra reg keys left behind after the uninstall of the last drivers, then switch to VGA, and restart. It would be in VGA mode and I could install the new drivers.

Now that I have XP, Detonator Destroyer won't work (I think becasue of the native Detonator drivers in the OS). I uninstall the drivers, and remove the card from Device Manager. Restart and it still detects the card and installs some old crappy Det's from the OS. Ican remove it again from the Device Manager, but after a couple seconds it detects the video card again and installs the drivers again. So i end up installing the new drivers on top of the native ones.

Now maybe this is where you can help me lil Jimmie (or anyone else). Someone on another forum somewhere told me that after I uninstall the old drivers (via Add/Remove), I should install the new ones before I restart, that way when it detects the card the new drivers will be used....

Is this correct?

I really would like to know the correct way to do fresh installs of new video drivers (Detonators) on WIndowsXP.

Thanks.

I would do exactly that. Remove the old drivers, install the new ones, do the restart. XP will then use the new drivers.
