remove the name...
hello all,
this is my first post here so please kindly adjust ;-) ok...let's get into the business. by mistake I removed a program by deleting the folder instead from the + and - programs panel. The program is deleted but the name is still there in the + and - programs box. is there any way to remove this name from the panel? your help is highly appreciated. thanks in advance. |

The reason it's on the list still is because you didn't remove the program, you deleted it; not supposed to do that. Like the previous poster said, reinstall, then uninstall.

You can remove the entry with Tweakui.

Yes, I would agree, your safest option is to install it and then uninstall it properly using Add/Remove programs.
For future reference, a third-party program like Norton CleanSweep will do a much cleaner uninstall than Add/remove Programs. HTH |

I just can't let this pass.
Recommending a pricey program like CleanSweep to a new user is asking for trouble. The windows add/remove option is an excellent way of dealing with this problem, and putting Norton on the system may cause more problems that it will solve. If there are no startup errors, then TweakUI would also work, to only remove the entry, but not the garbage left behind. If this is Windows98, then the scanreg /fix and scanreg /opt steps are what I would do after a reinstall/uninstall of the program, and everything should work just right. Not everyone has the money, nor the inclination to purchase more software, especially if it's only for a one-time use. There is a plethora of other tools available, free, that will do the same job. |

I wasn't suggesting using CleanSweep to solve this problem Jim.
I agreed that reinstalling and uninstalling the program is the easiest way for a beginner to make sure it is a clean uninstall which doesn't leave any debris behind. I personally like CleanSweep and since Win95 have found it very efficient and easy to use. In my opinion, much better than Add/Remove Programs. It certainly helps to keep my boy's PC relatively trouble-free even with the amount of junk they are installing and uninstalling on a daily basis. However, I know your view on this, so we will have to agree to disagree on this one. |

Good idea.I hate paying for software, when there's a free alternative. |
