XP Update or not ?

Hey guys I'm back, here's the deal my sister got a new Dell with XP and she has been reading the results of people using M$'s update and having to reinstall. She's stressing because 30% work and 70% (everyone who reads this) end up reinstalling the OS and should not attempt to use the update again?
Whats up with that ?
If it works OK ?
If it does'nt don't try it again ?
hopefully liljim or Statica will save me again from my delimma
Thanks in advance
Don'z

Hi dldz:
I would suggest going through with the updates for SP1. Number of reasons I could cite. Firstly, the failure rates for me personally havent been as alarming as that; I've had a issues on about 2 in 18 machines are so, which is the best Microsoft can do really. Secondly, the fixes that are provided are important ones. Thirdly, at some point she is going to have to get the fixes done, be it SP1 or SP2; the unfortunate truth is that with Microsoft SPs, it has been touch and go with all their service packs. I've seen failures even with Windows 2000's SP3. The best reason I can give is that its a new system, its easier to backup and to risk a reinstallation when the system is relatively empty, than say about 7 months down the road with the next SP.
As with all SP's its best to backup important data before proceeding.

I have not had any problems at all with 12-15 updates on several different processors and system config's. It seems that most people with the problems, are updating using Windows Update. I always use a downloaded version and never archive the files. It takes usually 20-35 minutes to complete.

I have heard more cons than pros regarding SP1 from slowing down your system to certain functions no longer working and complete crashes. I am not against service pack fixes but the second mouse gets the cheese. I keep up on all the critical updates for XP and have been using XP since early Oct. 2001 and have yet to reinstall it. A good report to read is from Gibson Research that also has a file fix if you do not wish to install SP1 which SP1 addresses. I will someday install a service pack fix when I am confident it does more good than harm. This is just my opinion and am not saying not to get SP1 just do a little research and decide for yourself.

I will also recommend the SP-1 update as it does address some major security issues with XP. I would advise you to get the download Network Install version and pass on the express install as it seems to be the most troublesome when it comes to the upgrade.

BTW I have not had any failures with XP SP-1

Seems that most of the problems I've heard of had to do with interrupted downloads, or folks with third-party download managers, when the "Express" option of installation is selected. Haven't had any trouble here at the lab with about a dozen SP1 installs. If her Dell is that new, she probably has quite a few of the updates already on there, and it won't be a problem at all.
