desktop icons not working

Hi ,
Hope someone can help as I am lost.I am having problems with the icons on my desktop when I doubleclick to open them (my documents, recycle bin, internet connection, my computer) they all open the system properties dialouge box.The only way I can get access to them is through windows explorer and they work normally.I am using windows98.I have tried scanning for a virus but found nothing.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance
Zog

I'm new to this as well mate

but i had a very similar problem, that when i clicked on the icons it would prompt me to go on the internet etc, i put up with it for months, I found out later that the Mrs tried to download somthing called Galor (i think it was called that), anyway she decided not to have it in the end, but she didn't delete it properly, so what i did was downloaded it again, then deleted it using the add and remove programs, and that done the trick. Maybe you have deleted somthing and not done it right, it worked for me.
