Windows shutdown not working...

Hi,
The shutdown option in the start menu has stopped working. It tries to shutdown, but that's all. Won't restart either. The power button is the only way to turn it off. What is going on here?

Oh by the way, I installed a new game the other day and it caused all sorts of problems, graphics mostly. I have uninstalled the game, but the problem remains.

Hi Joey L.,

See if anything at this site helps: Windows Support Center.

It helps if you supply more information about your particular system. What operating system are you using? Is this a home built or store bought name brand computer? Do you know the system specs like which CPU, motherboard, video card, etc...is installed?

Did this start after you installed the game that messed everything up? If so, try restoring it back to a point before then. If not, Cricket posted a very good link to help you troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks Guys. The advice and the link were very helpful. I have placed that link in my favorites!

I used a spapshot restore utility(Acer Time Machine) to fix the problem and near as I can tell, it was "Twain 32" (?) that was missing and causing all the trouble.

Thanks,
Joey L.

P.S. I am running Windows 98.

Just in case your curious to know what that file does, it helps with scanners, digital cameras, etc. There's a 16-bit version and a 32-bit version (your missing file was the 32-bit version. And the "Twain" part stands for "Technology Without An Interesting Name". The developers had a sense of humor.
