error message

when I get in window explore I often get this message:
C:\documents and settings\Brian\Desktop.... (it does not matter which folder or sub folder)
"The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."
Like I said, it doesn't matter where I am for it to pop up. If I close the window and reopen it, all is fine. But then it will happen again. All seemingly at random.
ANY ideas would be appreciated.
thanks
