scandisk in win95b
hi:
win95b: how do I disable scandisk from starting up. laptop shuts down properly however upon restart it states that it was not shut down properly and run scandisk. microsoft states there is problem with vertical cache, but does not support win95 and this issue. anyone thanks |

If it is a similar issue to the one that can occur in Windows 98, the problem is that data is not being flushed from the cache to the harddrive at shutdown.
If that is true, then you really want to be running scandisk (standard) to ensure that the "thing" that isn't being written out is disk directory or fat info. This should run relatively quickly, unless you have "tons" of files on your system. |

It probably didn't shutdown properly. Where do you see the "problem with the vertical cache"? An error message? Or an article you read? Here's a link to a troubleshooter for shutdown/scandisk on boot: http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm It'd be nice if simply disabling Fast Shutdown fixed the problem by allowing more time for the IDE cache to be cleared (like galaxian pointed out). There are other things that can cause this behavior, try the list & see if that helps. [Also, once and a while some folks end up resorting to motherboard bios updates to fix shutdown problems.] Best of luck . . . Gary |
