getting tcp/ip settings
i have a friend wh has an old pentium 166. it has no cd drive. and a win 95 installed and it's been a long time since ive used win 95
i managed to get a nic installed whitch brings me to my first question: is it normal that i only see one version of every protocol ( i know that in win 98 it should be two) the second problem is related to the nic. i isntalled it because her student room has a rj42 connection tthat schoud go to a router and to cable internet. i dont know the settings. (gateway, dns, ip, subnet) the only other computer that i have acess to that has internet has windows xp installed and has all the settings te to auto detect. i'm going overthere thursday and i am taking my portable with a win98 SE. anny sugestions as how i could get a ip adress and a subnet mask and maybe the other settings. i would prefer not to disturb the neigbour with the xp |

if i set my portable to autodetect i SHOULD be able to get a working internet connection. all i would need then is a way to detect what the actual settings are while they are set to auto detect. is there anny way under win 98se to do this???

Why not just set Win95 to autodetect as you call it?
Anyway, to find out what the settings are then open up a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. This will work on 98 and XP but not 95. |

the reason for not setting the win 95 to autodetect is that i treyd that and for some reasomn it won't work. i don't konw why.
thank you for the tip |

In 98, the command is "winipcfg", not "ipconfig /all".

I can use either command in my Win98SE.
