password protecting network folders
Hello there,
I have been trying to work out how to control access to specific folders on a basic winxp peer to peer network. In win98 in the sharing options for folders it is possible to specify a password for access - I could find no similar function on XP. Anyone know how to do this on XP as I don't to have set up individual rights and permissions for all the users. Thanks, Matt. |

I have had XP Pro and Home and from what i have found there is no way to set permissions or passwords for drives you can share in Home. THere are two options in Home, whether the drive is shared or not and whether or not you can write to it. In winXP pro you can set permissions and passwords. So if you Home the answer is no, if you have PRO its in the permissions.

In the home version boot into safe mode with the admin/owner account and set the permissions. The drive has to be formatted with NTFS.

Thanks guys,
As the machines are all XP pro, I will do it using the permissions. There was also an excellent tip in practically networking for hiding shares in home edition. Matt. |
