The line to add I think it would read more like this:
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows" /fastdetect

it is which physical drive the os is on
if you had both OS's on 1 physical drive then just the partion would change http://support.microsoft.com/default...022#References http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q314081 http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q102873 zaney123

Hi all,
Maybe I'm wrong here, but I thought that, if you are multi-booting with Win98 and Win2K, doesn't Win98 have to be the master? |

To dual boot, the BOOT.INI file needs to be in the root of the Windows 98 partition. This is what normally happens when you set up a dual boot in the recommended way i.e. install older OS first (Win9x) and newer OS (W2K or XP) second.
I would follow Hpro's advice, in the link above, on how to get both OS working together. This method will get BOOT.INI (along with the other necessary files NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, BOOTSECT.DOS) onto the root of the Win9x partition, where they belong. In practical terms, you trying to do exactly what he is describing - adding Win9x to an existing XP installation. HTH |

i would say just erase 2000, change back the boot.ini on 98 .
get 98 running nice,,while running 98 insert the 00 cd and try it that way http://www.pcmech.com/show/os/334/3/ http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=33269 Zaney123 |

On the third line of your ini the number
after partiton(2) (I put 2 assuming you only have the 2 hard drives and there not partitioned) refers to how many partitions you have or how many bootable partitions, I'm not sure excactly wich. You'll have to try both out. Now the number after partition in the lines for 2000 and 98 refer to what partition those operating systems are on. So if there are only the 2 drives with 2000 on one and 98 on the other you will have a choice of 1 or 2. These numbers are asigned during the fdisk or format of these drives and can be found in fdisk. Run fdisk from the command prompt and then choose to display partitions. Here you will find the numbers assigned to each drive or partition. Below is what I think your ini might look like. The partition numbers may vary, like I mentioned above. If this does not work try removing the /fastdetect in the last line, and if that does'nt work try removing the quotations from windows. So it will look like one of the lines below. multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows" multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=Windows --------------------------------------------------------- [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows" /fastdetect Right now I'm running 98, 2000, and Xp Pro on my system at school. So if the above does not work I will get a copy of my Boot.ini and post it here for you and you can modify it as needed. I hope this helps you out. db |

Yes,
Assuming ntoskrnl.exe is not corrupted, then the answer is in the boot.ini file. What HD with what OS is now jumpered as Master - Win98 or W2K? How many partitions do you have on each HD? If you only had one partition on each HD and Win98 was on the Master HD, then in your boot.ini "Windows" should be listed as on partition (1) and W2K should be listed as on partition (2). If Win98 is on the Slave drive, then it would be on partition (2) and W2K would be on partition (1). If you have more partitions, then you must make sure the partition number is right for both OS. C: is always partition 1, so you can work out the correct number for other partitions from there i.e. C=1 D=2 E=3 F= 4 etc. I would also try changing the "default" header in boot.ini to simply the drive that Win98 is on e.g. C:\ if it's C, D:\ if it's on D etc. That should be enough to enable Win98 to boot. Here is an example of a simple Win98SE and XP boot.ini citing two partitions: [Boot Loader] Timeout=30 Default=C:\ [Operating Systems] C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition" Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\ Windows="Microsoft Windows XP". As you can see the default OS to start is "C:\" which is Win98SE. If all else fails, then your other option is just to reinstall W2K over the top of itself. It will detect Win98, replace any corrupted files, and redo the boot.ini file. You may have to redo some of your settings, but your data will be left intact. HTH |
