98SE refuses to shutdown occasionally

It only happens occasionally. I'll use the same apps everytime, close them out and sometimes it shuts down and other times it doesn't.

I don't have anything running in the systray or background that shouldn't (msconfiged it all)

any ideas?

no big deal...just annoying as heck

thanks

It's been a long, long time since I used Win.98 but I recall there was a shut-down patch you had to download & install. You might try that if you haven't already done so. My other half uses 98 in the office at work and it only shuts down about 25% of the time.

Scooby,
The "Patch" is really just a bandaid and does not address the underlying problem. I suggest you at least review the material in the link posted by Cricket above and get a general feel for the overall problem.

Scooby,
I agree with LawyerRon, the patch is to be applied only after you have tried to solve the problem. I posted Microsofts troubleshooting link and Cricket posted a really good link, try troubleshooting the problem before applying the patch.
