Finding a copy of Win98 SE Upgrade

My father-in-law has an older computer running Win95. He plans to get a new computer next year, but wants to try to squeeze more out of the one he has.

It's an old GateWay so I don't want to start replacing hardware, but I think upgrading to Win98 will be an improvement. The problem is I can't find a copy of Win98 upgrade.

Right now he's getting crashes and very slow boots. I think it has to do with putting too many current programs on an old machine.

If anyone know where I can pick up a liscense, thanks!

Hi Ramayes! I read your post and went through all my old cd's and found a copy of Win98 Upgrade, which I no longer use since I am using Win98SE. Now, I don't want to be breaking any copyright laws or anything, but you are more than welcome to it, if you want it. BTW, there would be no charge. It is a legtimate copy that I bought when I went from Win95 to Win98. Since I don't know how this kind of stuff works, I hope I'm not breaking any of the forum rules or anything, but since I'm NOT selling it I don't think there is anything wrong with it. However, if I'm wrong, please let me know.

Hi ramayes,

The problems your father-in-law is having with his computer probably won't be fixed by upgrading Win95 to Win98SE. If the system is unstable now, upgrading it will only make it worse. If Win95 has been on the computer all these years without a format and clean install, it's probably bogged down with lots of unused programs, has a bloated Registry filled with unnecessary keys pointing nowhere, has corrupted system files and is suffering from general OS degeneration.

Has he been backing up all his important data files? Does he have copies of all the programs he needs? If so, a format and clean install of Win95 may be all that system needs (if that's Win95B he's using, that was one of the better Win9x OS's available...very fast).

A general rule with computers is "Don't install any software if the system is unstable or flakey."

Stubby. Perfectly legal, providing you are NOT using that copy/license on any other computer.

Ramayes, a format/reinstall would be the smart thing to do. Upgrading to Win98 won't fix any problems, and could cause more.
You CAN use a Win98 upgrade disk to do a clean install, so either way, it's a smart move.

Thanks Reboot! Like I said, I wasn't sure exactly how that worked and I didn't want to screw up. I haven't used that disk in years and it's still in the jewel case I put it in years ago. I figured that since I'll never use it again, I may as well let someone who could use it have it.

Stubby, thanks for the reply. I'd love to take you up on the offer.

Cricket, you mentioned too many things in the registry and corrupt OS files. I can go through the registry and take a look, but won't installing a new OS address most of the problems with corrupt OS files?

How would you start to clean it up?

One other thing I've learned since my post was that the worse of the problems started when he installed some cd burning software. I'm afraid it might not have been 95 compatible. I've uninstalled it, but it didn't help.

Is it possible that one of the systems files or a driver was changed and that is causing the problem?

Hi Ramayes!! Sorry it took so long to get back to ya, but with a 2 1/2 year old son running around, well I think you get the picture! Anyhow, just e-mail where you want it sent and I'll get it out to you probably Monday. How's that sound? Like I said eariler, I have no need for it anymore and since you can use it, you are more than welcome to it. Just let me know what you want me too do and where to send it
