Lightbulb How should I backup my computer?

I want to backup everything on my computer except for Windows. I currently have Roxio Create CD as the only available program to write to CDR's. I don't need to copy my main programs such as dragon NaturallySpeaking software or Vegas video three. But I do need all the files that are associated with those programs such as user files. This is my computer configuration

Dell Pentium IV 1.8 gigahertz
512 MB Rambus memory
40 GB 7200 RPM hard drive
ethernet card
cable modem
Windows XP
Dragon NaturallySpeaking software for speech recognition, version 6 preferred
pinnacle studio 7
Sony TRV 20 camcorder
Vegas video three editing software
Maxtor 80 GB 7200 RPM hard drive for video editing and backup

If there is an online tutorial for doing this I would appreciate the URL for it.

Cool

Have you considered anorther HD and using Norton Ghost to clone your Present drive. 80G HD would take a lot of CDR's and time if, say it's just 30% full.

I ghost my HD periodically, so if anything goes wrong I won't have to go too far back in time to get things working again. Data files I back up every other day, using WinRAR and a scheduled task that just goes in and compresses all the data files in the obvious places (My Documents folder, etc.). It is not a sophisticated system that selectively backs up only documents that have changed, and so on, but it works.

You must have ESP. The reason I want to back up everything on my hard drive is I'm getting ready to ghost it to the other hard drive. Just in case something goes wrong....

You really don't need to worry about backing up your HD before you ghost it. When you ghost, you are not making any changes to the source drive at all; it is just read, no data is written to it. I don't know how things could get messed up on the source drive during a ghost procedure (the destination drive sure, but you can simply start over).

I just had thought! What if I recorded a series of CDs using drive image 5.0 and then booted in to the partition I have set up on my secondary hard drive and installed those disk? Wouldn't that be the same is ghosting my hard drive? And that way I would also have an extra set of backup CDs. Please tell me if I'm missing anything.
