Ok - assuming you're using Win98, right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of your desktop screen, and see if it lists QuickLaunch or not. It should at least show it, but the checkmark next to it might be missing. Left-click to place a checkmark next to the "QuickLaunch" to allow the toolbar to be seen on the taskbar.
If you don't see QuickLaunch at all, try a "Repair" of your Internet Explorer install: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. . . and from the "Tools" menu, select "Repair Internet Explorer". Or download the latest IE6 or IE6 with Service Pack 1. . . . and are you saying that you were Unable to change the Folders View from Classic to View as Web page in Folder Options? (in Windows Explorer?) And - Welcome to the PC Mechanic forums. . . . Gary [p.s. ...can't hurt to scan for viruses, either. Did you make any changes just prior to your reboot?] Last edited by GaryRouth; 11-09-2002 at 06:38 PM. |

Which version of IE? Did you try SP1 for IE6? - and doublecheck your security settings in the Advanced tab of Internet Options, you can enable/disable Javascript there.
Do you use Active Desktop? Do you use System Policies (share the computer with others, who have different sets of personal settings)? Did you get the QuickLaunch toolbar back? I suppose you could re-create it manually if you had to. Here's where you should see it in Windows Explorer: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch . . . if you don't see anything there, then you definitely should get a new download of IE. I imagine Ad-Aware will find plenty of visitors, but I don't know of any dial-home programs that monkey with your display settings. . . that's more in Norton's ballpark. Hope you get it fixed up soon: I'll keep checking back to see how you're doing. . . . Gary |

Hmm.. which viruses? . . . (Klez.H? JSSeeker? . . . )
Why can't you re-install Windows? Is the installation disk missing? Is your computer a major-brand, or home-built? Are you in a Recovery Disk situation? Do you know whether or not the installation .cab files are on your hard drive? Did the Quick Launch folder show up in the location I posted earlier? Do you log on to this computer under a different name/password than other users? Do you know about System Policies? - And do you usually enable Active Desktop? - or not? Have you ever restored a Registry? If this trouble is really just a few viruses that you've now killed or quaranteened, and they monkeyed with your Registry: then you have the option, if the trouble is recent enough, to restore a saved Registry from a point prior to the disappearance (yes, probably virus-aided) of your QuickLaunch and javascript functions. ---> With a floppy boot disk (that you have scanned for viruses) or your original Windows 98 CD, boot into DOS ("start computer with[or without-doesn't matter] CD-rom support") [You'll have to enter Bios Setup before you do this: and set either the floppy drive or the CDrom drive to be the 1st boot device]. From the A: prompt, type scanreg/restore - You should then be asked which date's Registry you'd like to restore. Choose a date from the list that's earlier than your current trouble. _____ Lots of questions tonight, sorry to say, but sometimes they're necessary. Best of luck - . . . Gary |
