Defrag usage on 98se
Is it normal for the Defrag utility to start and continue to run its fix, only to somewhat continuously get to a radom point and then to restart its process with the message "Drive contents changing, restarting"?
Running 98se, defrag does look to be working and completing eventually. Thanks jef

LWHiway-
Make sure you aren't running any background applications (Anti-Virus Software, etc.) while trying to defrag. If you do think that the defragmentation process is advancing...and will possibly finish at some point, just let it go. If you haven't defragmented your drive(s) in a while it may take a long time. Another tip is to run disk defragmenter in "Safe Mode." Just hit F8 when your computer is starting up and you will get the Startup selection dialog. Choose boot into safe mode and then try defragmentation. You can also just hold the left shift key while your computer is starting up to jump to safe mode. Best of luck and have a great week. |

No problem Jef-
Best of luck. Oh, and remember you can check and see all the little programs running by using Microsoft's Configuration utility. Just go to Start...Run...then type "msconfig" Go to the startup tab and deselect any programs you don't NEED to run. As an extreme example, I like a very "free" system, therefore, I ONLY have the application "scanregistry" running. Then again, you must decide what you want running for your own system. Good luck and post back with problems. The men and women on this forum are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. |

Hi LWHiway,
Go here and download the WinME Defrag utility. Follow the instructions on the page for replacing the existing Win98SE Defrag. The WinME Defrag performs it's duties much faster than the Win98SE Defrag. Before you run Defrag, click on the Settings button and in the top box uncheck the 2 options, you really don't need them enabled. Cricket

IF Unselecting the Rearrange Programs has any affect on running Defrag, then you must also be running Taskmon. If you do not wish to do program optimization, unselect taskmon in msconfig, and delete all files in the directory \Applog.
Then it will not matter whether the option is selected or not. |

I highly reccommend using
'Disk keeper"instead of the shoddy windows defrag utility. I haven't had any problems with my computer since switching awhile back. Besides doing a better job its alot faster. |
