Dual Boot w/ new HDD

Hi, I would like to install a second new hard drive with WindowsXP. I would like to keep the original with 98SE on it and functional.
>>>
Now, from what I have read the new drive with XP should be the slave. Is this correct?
>>>
When I turn the computer on it will give me the option to boot to either OS?
>>>
Little confused here about the approach, have been reading way too much. Can someone confirm this and possibly the steps to accomplish this?
>>>
THANKS,
Joe

welcome to pcmech captian,

It is not as hard as you think. read through this link to install the HD.make it the slave drive

http://www.pcmech.com/show/harddrive/43/

once you have your 2 HD installed and functional..boot to win98 and just insert the WINXP cd and install it on the 2nd HD letter.

once installed it will give you the option for which OS you want to use.

Install the new drive as a slave, insert the XP cd, boot to the cdrom, at the prompt hit any key to boot to the cd and begin the setup process. The new drive can be partitioned and formatted with the XP setup. The XP boot loader will give you the option of which OS to boot to. If you want to share files between the two OS's format the new drive with FAT32 if not go with NTFS.

You should be able to import your OE data into the XP OE.

System Commander works well

The sugestions above, are for using WinXP's dual boot utility, which I know does work for most once configured. If you want another option, I choose to use a third party S/W utility to dual boot called V-Com System Commander v7.0 which has been around for a while to sucessfully *multiple* boot (i.e. you can load many OS'es with that program XP, 98, ME, Linux). The program gives you the option to choose which OS to boot too on startup. It works real good and is simple to configure. It also has bundled with it a utility to partition, resize, format, & other drive configuring, without loosing data that is already on your HD (s). It works much the same way as *Partition Magic* for partitioning. Pretty nice program for about $70 bucks. I have sucessfully (without loosing data) resized my partitions several times using System Commander. Good luck...dual booting is real kool !
