Opinions on my next WIN2K build
I need some opinions on my next Win2k build.
I recently read the great article someone posted here about the IRQ stacking issue and the inability to reassign IRQ's in WIN2K machines that are using the ACPI HAL. So, I was wondering if I should use the ACPI HAL or try the standard PC HAL on my next machine. I am only worried because on my last system the OS put my sound card, video card, modem, and something else on the same IRQ and according to Windows, there were no conflicts but I could see my performance suffer because of it. I appreciate anything you have to offer. |

Hi scorch
A new build with all current generation hardware shouldn't have any trouble at all with the ACPI Hal. It's been my experience that it works very nicely with parts designed for it. It was a rough go the first few years when all the legacy boards were hanging about. Here's a handy link from AnandTech (which contains yet other handy links): http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=47 . . . Gary |

Thanks for the opinion and the link Gary. I think I will stick with the ACPI HAL. I also figured out with reboot's help that I had forgotten to disable the COM ports and my serial port even though I wasn't using them for anything. I think that should free up some resources as well on my new system.
