WinXP Worth it?

i hated xp and now im thinking of getting it

I was thinking of getting WinXP pro since i can get it cheap, since a friend of mine works at microsoft she can get it from their store

i like the visual settings and i now use Win2k, so is it worth it in your opinion?

I'm a gamer / web designer / tweaker

Well, if you can get it for cheap, why not?

Install a dualboot and decide which one you want to use.

XP is the first Microsoft OS that I thought was worth getting at all. It has it's quirks, but it's been stable for me.

i find XP the most annyoing piece of **** around. so i would advice against installing it. there are millions of reasons. totally idiotic my documents, my music file system, and on and on. hundreds of little settings and thingies hidden. auto- install of MSN, some zip crap program. the 'administrator' crap,.and on and on. idiotic system requirments.(i mean come on pple 128 mb ram for a friggin OS?) and undoubtedly hundreds more of annyoing things that we dont know about yet (remember '98 keeps logs of every url, email, you ever type in. in its registry. ive heard several times XP is even more vulnerable than earlier versions to hacks.
i could go on and on and on, but i think everyone knows the reasons more than good enough no?
only prob i have with 98 is sometimes the bluescreens and having to reboot, but rarely happens more than once a week with my pc.
(i ve seen win98 crash final right after install on a friends pc once)
only thing i can say is. NOOOOOO !dont do it

I find Windows XP very stable and if You take the right precautions you can make XP pretty secure. Heck, anything is hackable, just don't leave information on your computer that you don't want to accidently share.

I find if one program crashes, the whole thing doesn't go down on you, unlike Windows 98SE did for me on a constant basis.

XP is very stable, you dont need to restart it like you did with 98,xp uses resources alot better.

Definitely go XP. Every system I have sold since XP's release has run great. The majority of problems have been user induced.

Go for it -- it's stable with the NT kernal and it's fairly configurable for advanced users (classic look and feel) or can be left as is for newer users.

Going from W2K to XP is not all that much different. You have about the same stability but with better driver support. For sure, upgrade from 98. It's a little more iffy to upgrade from W2K.

I prefer XP. Very stable! All of those little quirks that grasshopperbe talked about are what I like about it. Figuring them out is a learning experience.

I have been using XP Home since Oct.2001, and ran into very little problems it does have it's quirks and so does every OS I have ever used. Keep up with the updates get a good firewall and anti virus and learn how to tweak it (learn what really isn't needed to run it). I suggest more than 128mb ram I have 512mb and it runs smooth and is very dependable.

I found XP about a million times better than my previous OS. My previous OS was ME so I don't think I have room to talk anyway

at first I did not like xp at all, it was on my sisters new computer and from what I seen of it, I did not like it.

as time went on I found that I was starting to like it to the point that I bought it and installed it in a dual boot setup with w2k.
and the more I used it the more I liked it.

now I have xp-pro with sp1 installed, and I would not have anything else, I have used every system ms has come out with except me, and xp is with out any doubt the best , after sp1 is installed it is even better, I learn something about it every day and like it even more.

I have installed it on every system I have built for others and strongly recommend that you go for it. just don't forget to install sp1 also, it is needed.

I have it and love it also just tweak the hell out of it when you do get it. go to www.tweakxp.com and then www.blkviper.com.

grasshopperbe have you tried to tweak you system? My system has 512MB RDRAM and when I finished tweaking it I now have 286MB free that even while I'm on line.

I tweaked my kids PC they have 256MB SDRAM and befoe I started they had only 68mb free when I finished they know have over 140mb free. XP is good especially if you know what to tweak.

Guess I'm in the minority. I have the beta version of XP running on a virtual disk, so admittedly I'm not getting the full functionality. But, of what I've seen, I'm not so impressed. I find the program too big and unwieldy, installing many features I'll probably never use. Yeah, it's stable with the NT kernal...so is Win2K, more so in my opinion. I won't even mention what I think of product activation (don't want to start problems), but I do recognize that it seems to be the future for software. Doesn't mean I have to go there, yet. Finally, I like the 'professional' feel of Win2K. WinXP seems too 'gamey'.

So, I vote, 'NO'.

I'm only using around 85mb of ram in a 640mb system. Ask me how this thing runs. My vote is for xp.
