well i just got me a new Giga-byte GA-7VA with an AMD1900 (or 1.6 GHZ) to replace my P3 500 board. also got 256DDR RAM and the fan and new powersupply.
my problem is that my win98se doesn't like the change. im getting the "windows protection error. you must restart you computer" everytime i try to boot. the cmos & bios seems to be finding everything ok and is set up corectly as far as i can tel. one presented solution was to reinstall win98. which seems reasonable enought considering the drastic chipset change. however when i try to install 98 per my just created bootup disk for cdrom support; the setup command runs through a scandisk, then gets to the part where is says it's going to copy files required for installiation. then it just resets back to teh cdrom drive letter. so it won't install. no i'll reformatt the c drive if i half too.... but whats the guarrentee that it wont pull the same bull**** as when i do this. currently i have my old board back in so i can start backing up my sh t. but i'm eventually gona take it back out today. if you guys have any anserws for me look for my aim name ScarCrow28 i'll be logged on with my dad's laptop. thanx. And especially if you have an idea on how to NOT reformat the drive that would be great. i have a bunch of stuff on there, some un-backupable, most a real son of a B to reinstall. |

You do have to format C:....get into FDisk, delete the partition, recreate the partition, reboot, and format C: /s
And yes when you build a new system you must format and re-install Windows. I suggest you try to get ahold of another drive you can backup the data you want to save to. Or, it is possible your new motherboard came with software to image a hard drive...try using that, and maybe run it from Windows again once it's setup with the new hardware to recover files from the image. |

Question, can't i do just a format of drive c. then reinstall.
reason is the drive in question is partitioned 3 ways. c-e-f d & G belong to my old hard drive which is currently slaved. the "new" one is about a year old now and a great big bunch of stuff lies on them. stuff impossible to really backup. mostly for lack of another hard drive. the old one has stuff on it already and is also just too small a drive for use as a backup B**** |

well the **** just hit the fan
c is now formatted, and windows still won't install. for fun i put in xp pro into the drive. first power on. pc says invalid disk drive. press any key to continue. so i press, then it says it agin. then asks to boot to cd. so i say ok boots up to win xp. then i say to meself- well frig it, just install xp. so i tell it to install. then it gives me this : setupdd.sys could not be loaded. error code 7 ok now im worried. i checked this code out on microsoft.com. only thing i found some some user post saying he had a bad ram chip. part of me hopes that is the problem, but there is nowhere around here that i can think of getting some PC2700 ram. i could try putting it in another slot....would that really make a difference? right now its in slot 1. or any other ideas???? EIDT: a full format has been done. before it was a quick format. but booting up with cdrom support still yeilds errors..... running setup goes through scandisk. then reads registry, then says it's going to copy files but stops and resets back to the root directory. whats the deal????
