Boom Major Problem

Hey all...Im trying toget some help here with my firend pc, Its an old one, 2 gig HDD, 64 megs of ram, P1 processor...anyways, I went over to his house, and he tells me, that hehe was trying to install AOL to his computer, and he kept getting an error message that told him error in "something".tmp he doesnt remember the name but he knows it was definelty .tmp, so he went into a file and just started deleting .tmp files and then he said he turned off the computer and when he turned it back on...he gets one message, cannot start internet explorer, or error: internet explorer, now I have tried to go into system bios and load default system setting, nothing seems to work, all that happens is when I turn the computer on, I get the internet explorer msg, and it stops, nothing happen, I tried ctrl, alt delete, and he doesnt even have systray on it, no programs at all...I tried my best to get it working but Im lost, any ideas???

Cool

Boot to a DOS prompt and do a SCANREG/RESTORE and pick a date earlier than when he deleted.

Same thing happened to my bro's old HP...just do as Confused suggested and it should be fine. I booted to Command Prompt, typed in SCANREG.EXE and it allowed me to restore a previous registry. Booted up fine after that. Good Luck

How though...I have tried to get to an MSDOS prompt, cause I figured at the very least I could reformat his drive or soemthing, but I dont even know how to get to an MSDOS prompt...how would I go about it????

When the message "Starting Windows 98..." appears hit quickly the F8 key. A menu should be displayed where you can select "Command Line Only".

If the menu isn't displayed then you weren't quick enough. Wait until Win finishes loading, then restart and try again. HTH

Or I think you could boot with a Win boot disc to get to a dos prompt.....
