Unhappy wayyy up the creek

i have come to the conclusion that my hard drive needs reformatting....but i have no floppy disk to do the format from and for some reason my computer isnt reading from the cd drives...when i boot with the drive that needs formatting, it says...file \winnt\system32\config\system...is invalid or missing, press r at first screen to attemp to fix....but i cant since i cant put the cd in...any ideas?its running win xp pro. how would i go about making a floppy with the format.com file on it? right now i have the hdd in my other comp with it to slave so i can get the files off of it and stuff, and i tryed to copy the system file, just to see what would happen, but it didnt work...hope this isnt too confusing

If you can get to a command prompt then you should be able to make a bootable floppy from there. I'm not 100% sure of the command right now, but I believe it is sys A: or something like that.

yes save it to a floppy..what it will do is install the cd drivers needed to boot to the xp cd.

.Have you tried it this way?

I assume you have tried to change the bios boot sequence so it boots to cd first and tried inserting the disc and booting like that?

Well, reinstalling Windows is always the ultimate answer.

That error message can mean the Registry is corrupt. I would have tried System Restore first. You don't need access to the Windows CD for that.

You can maybe try that first if you ever get the error again.

little late for that now, but oh well...anyways, i have made a partition, "c" and formatted it, but i dont know how to load windows on it...when i restart and take out the floppy, the windows 98 startup screen flashes for a fraction of a second, then i get the command line...what do i do now? i feel so stupid, but oh well, i'll be ok.lol.

scott,

You didn't need to use bootdisks.

To install XP, you set the boot sequence in the BIOS to CD-Rom first and then bootup with the XP CD.

The XP CD will allow you to delete partitions, repartition, format the HD, and then proceed with the OS install.

HTH
