2000 Pro unable to join domain

i`m trying to setup a new W2000 Pro workstation on a W2000 server.

whenever i try to join the domain i get an error message..."the network path was not found".

i`m logging on as administrator and able to ping the server. Microsofts knowledge base suggested that i enter the DNS Ip address manually in TCP properties and then connect but i had already tried this before hand and still had no success. (able to run "ipconfig /all" to obtain the info)

it`s been suggested to me that the router is broadcasting internet IP addresses and i should check if the router is broadcasting the servers DNS IP`s first and the routers secondary.

not sure how to do this. can it be done via a mmc snapin and if so which one?

their are currently several W98 machines and 2 NT4`s and they log onto the domain without a hitch.

BTW, we`re using DHCP to obtain IP adrresses and if i ping the domain name from the W2000 WS i get a ping reply and IP address.

any ideas or direction would be appreciated.

Check via ipconfig if both machines are on the same subnet. See if you can ping by machine name - not just by IP. If the machines cannot find eachother by name you can manually alter the hosts file by using the name and the IP. Then try again.

hi Christoph and thanks for the reply. this is one of the posts i was hoping would fade away quietly.

through nslookup i determined that the DNS ip addresses i was recieving were in fact internet. and why this was happening was beyond me.

ok, i checked and discovered that DNS is not installed on the local server. DHCP and WINS are installed and this would explain why the W9 and NT4 machines were logging onto the local domain and not the W2000. i just ASSUMED DNS was installed and never checked.

should know better.
