Windows XP Problem

Hi-
I am using windows xp and recently uninstalled a program which took a .dll file with it, leaving my computer asking for that file at restart. The file was called sys32\hal.dll.
Since I couldn't boot into windows, I reinstalled winxp in a separate folder, hoping that the new installation wouldn't take my old "My Documents" folder. After the installation, I see my old folders in explorer, but can't access them. My old programs are still installed in the "old" windows installation, but I can't access them in the new windows installation.
I want to uninstall the new installation but can't see how to do that in Add/Remove Programs. I copied the hal.dll file into the old windows folder already and want to get rid of this new installation. Is this possible? Thanks for any guidelines on how to do this!

If you are sure that your old installation will now boot then it's a simple matter to remove the new installation of XP. All you have to do is delete the folder you installed it into. Then open your boot.ini file in any text editor and remove the line that points to that installation. Next time you reboot you will be take directly to your old installation.

You can modify your boot.ini file to point back to the old installation as the default OS on your computer. Then reboot and it should load your old OS if that missing dll is the only culprit.

In regards to documents - you will need to change the permissions on that folder to access them.

Unhappy

I ran msconfig and see the boot.ini text but can't copy it or change it.

I uninstalled win xp from the new folder, and after I replaced the hal.dll file in the old folder and rebooted, I got the same error message that it was missing again, so I reinstalled again to get on, since that was the only choice the os cd gave me when booting from it. I did try R for my setup and when it asked me for my administrator password, I typed it in and it wouldn't work, so I had to go with the full installation again.

Under documents and settings in explorer, it still won't let me change the old user folder to be shared. I get the message "access denied". I right clicked properties and went to the sharing tab and did it from there. Was that right? I am really worried at this point that I won't be able to get my folders backed up.

With the XP cd in place, boot from cd,xp loads, skip the r optoion and click on install,XP will offer to install or repair an existing OS,choose repair,if you still have both OS's on the system it might get confused, don't know, but try it.

Thanks for the help...I only have the oem version of xp home. I don't have the same options as the retail version.

The only thing that I can't understand is why my folders show in documents and settings but I can't access them. I tried dragging to the shared folder, changing properties/sharing tab, etc. Nothing would work. Even though I can see the folder there, properties says 0 bytes, so I'm thinking that when I installed the os again, it took that out, but why did it leave the folder and programs? Some programs work now and some don't. Adobe Photoshop is still listed in my programs, but won't open because of a new owner username. It just turned out to be more problems racking my brain than its worth. I could call dell, but if my old username folder in documents and settings is empty, I should just start everything over. I've read up a lot on all, and I believe this has something to do with moving a previous windows environment to a new windows environment. Then I thought that if I could do that (over my head anyway), that the folder wouldn't actually be empty anymore. I'll chalk it up and buy myself a windows xp book!

Cool

I don't have answer to your dilemma, but for information the OEM is the same software and has same options as the retail version. It just doesn't have the manual and same support as the retail version.

I finally figured out my problem...I had a username but not an administrator name and password. Once I created those, I could change user/folder permissions under disk management in administrative tools. I was right that the old folder wasn't empty like properties showed. I had 11 gigs of stuff to backup and got to save all!! Thanks for your help
