Cricket, concerning reinstall of XP
I read the other thread concerning this but I haven't activated my install yet. So.. if I reformatt the hard drive and reinstall XP will I get another 30 days and not have any trouble with the install? I'm having problems getting XP to use my modem. The documentation that came with it (US Robotics data/fax 5685E) says it will work and gives me instuctions to install. I have to make Win except it and it says it's not signed. It "would" dial up at first but not do anything (this page cannot be....). It has to be the modem 'cause I took my old PCI modem and installed that and it works, although slower. I have downloaded the latest update from USR and the more I fool with everything to try and get it to work, the worse it gets. I even went to ISP and got the DNS #s and set those instead of getting them automaticly. Any ideas?

Hi suitcase,
You can activate WinXP by phone. Be ready to jot down a lot of numbers for the activation code. What kind of modem is that? ISA or PCI? I don't recognize the model number. If it's a PCI modem, it might be a winmodem (which are pretty troublesome). The USR 2976 or 2977 are hardware controlled PCI modems and are less troublesome to install and use. Modem could be defective. Have you tried to install it in another computer? Cricket

It's a external serial modem. And while you're here, I just tried to download a virus protection program little over 5 meg and when I returned the message said disc was to small for all the data. 80gig?? Whats up with that. I tried to download some updates from Microsoft but it wouldn't let me, I think that was because XP isn't activated yet. Would that cause the problem with the other download?

Hi suitcase,
You're having trouble with a external serial modem? (Gee, I have a USR external serial modem and didn't even recognize the model number )Is the serial (COM) port enabled in BIOS? Is the COM port configured properly? Does Windows "see" the modem? It's been awhile since I set up an external serial modem and I can't remember what I did, but I do remember it was really easy to do...but that was on Win98SE, not WinXP. Did you try using the "Add New Hardware" in control panel? I hope reboot sees this thread, he's one of the modem masters. Cricket

I just bought the ext modem a few weeks before my build. Yes windows does recognize it but it won't connect. The documentation reads "*US Robotics has throughly tested this driver in conjunction with the supported hardware and has verified compatibility with Windows XP and 2000." I have downloaded the latest driver and installed it.
I hooked up the USR modem first. It was recognized and would dial up and connect. But it would not connect with a web site. I only got the "this page cannot be displayed" message. After calling my ISP and being walked through setup it would work but verrrrrrrrrry slowly. I mean it took minutes to load Google home page. Now since I installed the modem from my Dell (PCI Conxtant) it works and won't con at all with the USR modem. I'm thinking of restoring to when I installed windows and starting over. Or would you recommed formatting and reinstall of XP? Everything else seems to be fine. It just don't like my ext modem. By the way, when I use it on my old Dell, my con speed went from 49333 to 52000. |

Hi suitcase,
Sorry, but I mostly use Win98SE and really don't have much experience with WinXP yet. Don't know what the problem could be. Maybe you could PM reboot and ask him to visit this thread. Cricket

A few things with external modems...
First, you must set the com port to 15200, N, 8, 1 Second, you must have the modem turned on before the computer. Third, you must boot to safe mode, and remove ALL traces of your modem(s) from device manager, including com ports! Restart with nothing attached, then shutdown, restart, adjust the com port. Shutdown, plug the modem in, turn it on, restart. Your computer should find the new hardware and attempt to install it. Make sure you install it using the disk/drivers that you just got, and NOT the default XP ones. If you don't get the choice, let it install, then go into device manager, highlight your modem, right click, properties, driver tab, and update driver. Browse to wherever you have the driver extracted. Check the com port settings again to verify, then go into device manager, modems, your modem, properties, diagnostic tab, click on More Info. If all is well between the computer and the modem you will be able to tell. Once that's done, you must tell the computer to use the new modem for dial-up. Remove any Dial-up-networking diallers you have, then go to add/remove programs and remove dial-up-networking from the Communications tab. Restart. Go to Start > Run > and type in: inetwiz Make a completely new connection to your ISP. Test it. Post back and let us know. |

Also some of the companies lie about being xp compatible.I recently bought a digital camera and it stated ok for xp ,it took them 4months before they had the correct drivers on their site. Also after getting the latest drivers for your modem, before installing them remove your older drivers for your modem first.
