Exclamation win.com gone!!!

win98se system
scanreg/restore or fix are inop.
himem.sys and 2 other files are missing or corrupt.
win.com can't be found.
is there a way to recover win.com or do i have to rerun setup with the boot disc and then cdrom and install right over the top of the damaged sys??

Hello Racerbrownn,
Just find a windows 98SE cd or find the file online and extract it into your windows directory. Hope that helps.

if the win.com file holds all the configuration files, then i can't download it.
i would rather not have to reload the sys if win98 makes a backup copy hidden somewhere.

1. What happens when you boot to DOS and do a scanreg/restore?
(inop?)

2. While in DOS do

Dir Win.com /s

3. Is the file there? If so, do

EDIT C:\MSDOS.SYS

The front portion should look like

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootMulti=0
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.1998
Disablelog=0

4. If it does, type

EDIT C:\Autoexec.bat

Any PATH statements there?
If so, what are they?

From the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Create a new Win.com file by extracting the Win.cnf file from your Windows disks or CD-ROM to the Windows folder, and then renaming it to Win.com. To do so, follow these steps:

Extract the Win.cnf file from your Windows disks or CD-ROM to the Windows folder. For information about how to do so, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

ARTICLE-ID: 129605
TITLE : How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

NOTE: The Win.cnf file is in the following locations:
Disk 3 of the original Windows 95 disks
Win95_03.cab of the original Windows 95 CD-ROM
Win98_28.cab of the original Windows 98 CD-ROM
Win98_25.cab of the original Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM
Rename the Win.cnf file in the Windows folder to Win.com. To do so, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com
Restart your computer.
