Help! Problems with cable modem and Windows.

I am having a big problem trying to get cable access on my new custom build. When I tried to put the modem on my new pc, it didn't work. I called the service provider, and they said there was somthing wrong with my OS and "Winsock" (sp?). They said I need to get someone to fix winsock because the computer is not picking up the IP address. I have no idea what winsock is. Can anyone help me?? My OS is windows XP. They also said I could try and reinstall windows. How do I do that and will it affect the programs on my computer? Thanks!!!

One step at a time - are you using USB or an Ethernet card for the modem?

try clearing all of your history, temp internet files (check the offline files check box as well), and set everything back to their defaults. make sure you have dhcp enabled and that all of your hardware is functioning properly.

just a suggestion.

Go into control panel, add/remove programs, Windows stuff.
Remove ALL communications programs.
Restart.
Check device manager to see if your NIC is installed correctly (under network adapters).
If it is, go to Start > Run > and type in: inetwiz
Make a new connection based on what your ISP tells you (LAN, not dial-up).

Reinstalling windows XP

How do you go about reinstalling windows XP? Will I have to call them to get a code again? Thanks.

Why would you need to reinstall XP?
Use the repair option from the CD (boot to the CD and select Repair instead of Install).
Don't always believe what your ISP tells you. They are not always the best techs, and like to take the easy way out by blaming the problem on something YOU did, not their hardware/software. This isn't always the case, but it happens often enough for me to mention it.

Cool

I haven't used it yet, but several have reported on this forum that if you boot with XP CD it will recognize that XP is loaded and give option to repair or reinstall.
