Windows Diagnostics

Hi friends,

I am running a propreitory diagnostic utility to find out more about Windows. I could'nt understand certain info reported by the diagnostics utility. Please help me on this

1. DirectX Version - 4.08.01.0810
2. CPU Ident - x86 Family 15 Model 1 Stepping 2
3. Total Physical Memory - 255 M
4. Available Physical Memory - 68 M
5. Total Commited - 618 M
6. Available to Commit - 331 M

a. I don't understand the Direct X version format? Is there any site which can help me to decode this info

b. With no info on CPU frequency, I find it difficulty to understand what is meant by the terms Stepping, Model and Family

c. I don't quite understand the total commited memory concept.

I understand that there are more smarter tools like SiSoft Sandra, BCM Diagnostics, Belarc Advisor. However, I am keen on
understanding this utility because I will be using it often.

Thanks a lot

Thanks

I'm not sure about all the stats you show, but will take a stab at it.

1. DirectX Version - 4.08.01.0810

I believe you have directx ver 8.0. You can run dxdiag.exe and it will tell you more info.

2. CPU Ident - x86 Family 15 Model 1 Stepping 2

The CPU ident says that you have an Intel chip and it is capable of stepping down (running slower on battery)

3. Total Physical Memory - 255 M
4. Available Physical Memory - 68 M

Not sure about these, so here is the guess.

5. Total Commited - 618 M

This is the amount that Task manager reports (in K) of memory used.

6. Available to Commit - 331 M

This is the amount that Task manager reports (in K) of memory free.

You might also check the documentation of the program you are using, or their web site.

Hope this helps.

SiSoft Sandra is a good utility for diagnostics. It also explains what everything means.

Processor model and stepping are the hardware equivilants of software versions. You don't have to pay too much attention to that.

You have 255 MB of physical memory. Because that is an odd number, that probably means you have 256 MB of actual memory installed, while your on-board video is using 1 MB of that, leaving 255 MB.
