problem installing XP Pro on a brand new system
I am trying to install win xp pro in my brand new system that i just built. this system consist of a gigabyte 7vaxp, corsair 512 ram, ati AIW 8500dv, Western Digital 120 gig, cen-dyne CD/RW, etc. when i boot-up the system to cd-rom it will initialize the setup and then when it is time to install xp. where you have an option to press ESC to continue or R for repair and exit etc. it will only go up to there and it would just frozed, no matter what key to press. any advice on what i can do. the only OS that i could install without no problem was my mellinium CD. but you know the deal i want to install just the win xp pro, so i could have it on the ntfs format and mellinium doesn't give you that option. so help me out, anybody!

Hi ontoy,
Does that hard drive have an OS installed on it already? If it does, you may need to zero out the drive with a zero fill utility. Cricket

Hi ontoy,
Not sure why that's happening...you might want to try clearing the CMOS and then leaving it at default settings. Check to see that your drive jumpers are set correctly for the type of IDE cable used. Do you have the hard drive on a seperate IDE channel from the CD-RW? Does the BIOS recognize the hard drive size properly? Cricket

Ensure that HD is set to cable select and that blue connector goes to mobo and black to HD. Try a different stick of RAM if this and Crickett's suggestions prove fruitless.

yeah, just came back from fry's electronics i swapped out the hard-drive with a new one and i am still having problem installing win xp. yeah i think i need to replace the memory with another brand that the board recommends. cuz i don't see no corsair in the compitability list. only like samsung, apacer, and micro. one problem though i think fry's don't carry this type of brandname memory. oh yeah, if you have a brand new hard-drive do you have to format it. don't win xp will ask at installation if you want to format c etc. if i ever get pass the to continue installing xp. I just don't know what the hell is going on here it's my second system that i built, i taught it would be alot esier this time around. here my system again>>>
Gigabyte 7vaxp CPU xp 2100 corsair PC3200 512 cen-dyne cd/rw ATI AIW 8500dv Western Digital 120 gig anybody out there with a similar setup or same motherboard let me know what i'm doing wrong. cuz i'll probably go back to fry's again to swap out the memory. |

Before you can format, you need to partition the hard drive, and then format. If you are installing Windows XP... Windows XP will partition & format it for you... -Matt |

Hi ontoy,
What FSB are you running your motherboard at? Is your WinXP CD a genuine Microsoft disk or a burned copy? Cricket

memory memory memory. for every system i've build, the first thing i would test is your memory. there are free utilities that you can d/l to test this.

And people question why we have so many used parts and are always swapping things. Not sure that I would have ever got to swapping keyboard though. Thanks for resolution to problem. If it will just stay in memory.

I did a service call on Friday. User had taken the computer home after a clean XP install, all drivers tested, everything perfect!
At the client's house, nothing worked, no mouse, no keyboard, can't get into BIOS to check anything...fussed around for 10 minutes, shutdown, switch the mouse and keyboard into the proper sockets, restart, go home with a reminder to label things for color blind people.

Reboot when I got mine together outside the box like recommenced here, it booted right up. After installing windows xp I tried to get back to setup and couldn't. Rebooted several times and thought I was just missing my timing hitting delete. Couldn't enter BIOS. Was using a borrowed mouse, keyboard and 15in monitor. So I got my keyboard and hooked it up. Entered setup on the first try..??? Who knows, what evil lurks........

As well as trying different Ram on that Gigabyte, you may want to try installing XP with the absolute minimum of hardware installed.
You can always add the PCI cards, peripherals (such as scanners and printers), and Burner later. |
