Installing Win 98 over Win95
I am using Windows 95 and am going to install Windows 98 (not the upgrade). Will Win98 install over Win95 allowing me to use my existing programs or should I format the drive and install Win98 and reinstall all of my existing programs.
Thanks in advance Bob |

It would be best if you did have an upgrade CD. That would be the way to go. I'm pretty sure that your way would work too, but I'm not entirely certain.
One thing you should do is backup your files in case something does go wrong.

A clean install is always better to do . No problems with old issues being on the computer, you get a new set with the new OS.
![]() Just make sure you have all the needed drivers for all of your hardware before you format the drive. |

The full edition should have an upgrade option aswell..Not sure..Best way is to do a clean install to avoid any problems...I know..because I installed WINXP over Windows 98SE and I got tons of problems..Did a clean install of WINXP and everything worked fine until my sound card drivers didn't like winxp, so I had to go down to win98se..

Boot from your Win98 CD with CD support. Switch to the C:\WINDOWS directory and rename WIN.COM to WIN.XXX. Switch to your CD drive and run setup. When prompted for an installation directory, it will be defaulted to C:\WINDOWS.000, rename this back to C:\WINDOWS and continue with the installation. When complete, you will be upgraded to Win98 with all shortcuts, programs, and data intact.
