NTFS and FAT32...
Hello everybody..
Quick question. I had a friend do this one time..He installed a brand new HD..formatted it and put it as NTFS in WIN2K...Then he had another HD, that already had WIN98SE and had the FAT32 file system.. So he plugged in the NTFS drive as master, and the FAT32 drive as SLAVE..Booted up into WIN2K..WIN2K and BIOS both recognized the drive.. Problem was..he wasn't able to copy files from FAT32 drive into the NTFS file..because when he tried..it said the drive needs to be formatted...(Even though the drive was already partitioned and had win98se on it already) My question is... Since he wasn't able to copy the files from one drive to the other..Does that mean FAT32 cannot work with NTFS? or is it the other way around? -Matt |

He also tried using a hard drive partioning utility..where he was able to copy files from one HD to the other..The program allowed him to copy files from the NTFS drive into the FAT32 drive..but it did not allow him to copy files from FAT32 drive into the NTFS drive..

Depending on what os you are trying to copy from/to
WIn2k will read both ntfs and fat32. Win98 can not read ntfs, only with special utilities. Suggestion...if you want to use win98, format the win2k partition with fat32, or else use only win2k and ntfs. |

That's what I was going to do..instead of installing win2k with ntfs..i was going to use fat 32 with win2k, that way i could transfer the files over..but since my friend installed win2k with ntfs, it wouldn't work..i was just asking questions if it was possible to do...

Well, he could probably degrade to FAT 32 if he wanted to. Personally, I don't like degrading, and I don't like FAT 32. For me, it wasn't stable. But if you are serious, have your friend pick up a copy of Partion Magic, and or have someone with a copy create you a pair of disks, you won't have to buy the CD if you can have someone who can do that.
