Installing DOS...
How do you install DOS? Does an operating system install DOS? Because when I built my system, I just popped in the boot disk, installed win 98se, and I was able to use DOS commands and boot up into DOS...
Another question is..How would I upgrade the DOS? Simple question..been bothering me for days heheh |

Windows 98 comes with DOS already. You don't need to upgrade or install anything.
ME however doesn't come with DOS, and that's another reason why I hate ME. I still use DOS to play games, oldies mostly. Win 9x and ME are still based on DOS. NT, Win2k and XP no longer use DOS.

The DOS Command Prompt in Me is well hidden. However, there are simple fixes around which allow you to regain the ability to boot to the Command Prompt again.

I tried the command promt at ME once, Mike. I wanted to fix a client's machine registry with scanreg but ME never allowed me to do dat. Now I remember I could actually go to the prompt and type scanreg /repair but it kept refusing to procceed.

I've never used ME, but can't you press F8 during boot-up and then go to Command Prompt only?
I should probably find out a little about that just in case I ever get asked to look at an ME system, but I haven't found any businesses using it to date! David. |

When I booted up into DOS with Windows ME I believe..I would type in FDISK and it would not recognize it..Windows ME does not have dos support just like Windows 2K and Windows XP

I always just boot from the WinME CD, switch to the C:\ prompt and run the command
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND Then run whatever you want.

Well, ofcourse, you can install DOS seperately into another partition and run a dual boot with Windows.
Interesting what you said Hal. Nuke Look at this thread for a previous discussion about Me and DOS http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=47653 |

HAL,
since Win ME does not have DOS support.. I would just boot with a WINME CD and switch into the C:/ prompt like you said right? |

Hi Matt,
Yes - but Hal also pointed out that you then need to either go to the Windows / Command directory where all the DOS programs are found, or add that folder to your PATH environment variable to allow the command interpreter to find the DOS programs from wherever you happen to be (directory-wise). Using the PATH command is probably more efficient. HTH, David. |
