HP, running Windows 98 FE, won't boot to Windows. It will boot in Safe Mode. Any ideas?

Hi RayH,
What was done to the computer just before this started to happen? Was any new hardware added? Was any device driver updated? What have you tried so far? Cricket

This is a computer that belongs to a co-worker's son. It's a hand-me-down from the other son, who used it in college. I was just trying to get a jump on some ideas.
I believe the problem may be a non-connected NIC card. Windows is looking for a network that ain't there. Maybe I'll try c:\scanreg\restore.......... But thanks for reading. Ray |

Hi Ray (& Hi Cricket)
Did the Registry restore do the trick? RegClean is another handy tool for hand-me-down machines, in case a bunch of things got removed willy-nilly just before it changed hands. And when you were in Safe Mode, did you notice any devices listed that aren't there anymore? (you've probably fixed it already, but I've got to get my typing exercise . . . ![]() . . . Gary |

Hi RayH,
I'd remove the NIC and then remove any entry for the NIC in Safe Mode Device Manager. One of my computers had the same problem this weekend. Hard drive developed bad clusters right at the beginning of the drive and I had to replace it. Sometimes a bad CD-ROM drive can hang a boot up too. If this is a old PC, you may have to strip it down and do a piece by piece troubleshoot. Cricket

The scanreg/restore from the F8 command prompt did the job. But first, while in safe mode, I got rid of about 15 listed CD ROMs. Different brands and models. A left field job.
I installed Easy Cleaner and Power Defrag on the computer. It took me about an hour to get rid of unnecessary files on this 8 GB HD. It had over 1200 useless files for a total of 2 GB. Then I went to Defrag. The kid never did it before. Usually, with Power Defrag I can defrag my 15 GB in about 8 minutes, 20 if I have a few images stored on the hard drive. This thing took about 4 hours to defrag an 8 GB HD! Also, went into MS Config and turned off a whole bunch of nonsense. Uninstalled a useless McAfee. Gave him an excellent free online anti virus! The kid's computer works fine now. Thanks for your help. |

Gee, that computer was a mess...2GB of unecessary files and 4 hours to defrag 8GB! I hope you showed the owner how to maintain his computer the right way . Cricket
