I am trying to defragment the new paritions..but it keeps saying the following in the pic.. I used Partition Magic ..the latest version.. I have used this program on my desktop and it works normally.. i also did this on the same notebook a month ago before i had to use the restore CD..I have run chkdsk.. in WIN and in DOS...I even tried putting a few files and stuff in the new HD as it wont be empty.....still nothing

Go to Start, then Run, then type in "chkdsk /f" and click OK.
It will tell you that Chkdsk cannot be run, but then ask you would you like it to run the next time you start Windows. Type "Y" and then hit Enter. Chkdsk will run when you reboot and then you should be able to defrag. It's infuriating to have to do that every time you want to defrag. You could run chkdsk under Win98 and ME but now you have to reboot to do it. I believe it has something to do with the NTFS file system. |

Hmmm...did you try running the defrag command from the command line?
i.e. Open the Command Prompt and at the prompt type: defrag c: /a /v I don't know if that will force it through or not...probably not but it's worth a try. It sounds like something is messing up on you when windows starts...it's causing your drive to get "dirty" even after doing chkdsk on a reboot. I would try doing the chkdsk thing again but then booting to Safe Mode. You should be able to run defrag then. |
