Changing Win98SE User
Short of reinstalling Win98SE and entering a new name as the person who Windows is registered to, is there any way to change this, maybe in the registry or something? Here's the situation...I am cleaning up a Win98SE box for a coworker, who wants to remove all traces of his ownership. He wants to sell his machine but doesn't want all his info on it. Basically, everything is clean accept in control panel/system, where it lists his name as the person who the machine is registered to. Is there any way to change this? Thanks.

Yes, but technically that's illegal. Selling the PC with the OS is technically illegal. You are giving a person a PC with a free copy of the OS on it. Those kinds of situations are tricky.

He's not giving anyone a free operating system. He already purchased it with the computer when he originally bought it. Additionally, he is selling the computer with all it's original software, including the OS. So, are you saying then that he can sell his PC with no OS, and make the person go buy their own operating system?

I concider myself to be extreemly moral, honest and ethical but
I just cannot see how or why Microsoft should be able to retain ownership of software that someone has paid for . It does not seem just. I mean youre supposed to format an old PC before you sell it for $300 and the buyer has to pay Bill $200 for an OS to run it ? Forget it ! |

I agree with you Parangles. The guy just wants to sell his PC. I can't blame him for wanting to include the operating system with it without having his name permanently associated with it. I could reinstall the operating system if I wanted to, but I was trying to save a little time and avoid having to reinstall all the hardware drivers.

If he's selling the PC, he must legally do one of two things:
1. Wipe it. 2. Include the CD, the COA, and the license with the PC. That said, go into regedit, and do a search for the current user's name...'nuff said. |

As I had mentioned, he is selling the PC with all the software that came with it, including the OS. These are all the original docs and cd's including the COA, and the license with the PC. Thanks for your response. I'll try renaming all user references in the registry to something generic like "Compaq User" or something like that.
