Registry Question

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
The question I would like to ask is "Which one of these Registry files contains the [last known good configuration]? An honest correct answer is all I need. The OS is Windows 2000 and the reason I want to know is that I don't and I would like to. Do you guys know?

Hi twborbely,

I think it is actually located at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

because this is where the Service Control Manager, which is also responsible for starting Services, looks at Startup to determine whether this should be saved as LastKnownGood.

See this link for more info

I don't think that is correct. All the resources I've checked places it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet.

See this MS link for further confirmation

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000..._last_good.htm

"When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, Windows 2000 restores information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet only. Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain."

Unless I'm missing something.
