Will Windows XP Work On My System?

My computer only has 10 gigs, a Pentium II, 501 MHz Processor, and 192 MB of RAM. Will Windows XP work for me?

Cool

Your HD is a little small. I run XP Pro and started with a partition of 4G and loaded all programs and applications to a different partition. I still ran out of space when I tried to install SP 1. I now run a 8G partition for XP only. Programs and applications still go to a different partition.

I don't know if XP home requires as much space or not.

Hi Jaguar_XJ220,

Judging by what the guys have said here, you need a minimum of:

400MHz CPU (so you just sneak past that one)
256Mb of Ram (256-512Mb is sweeter)
at least 6GB-10GB of HD space (depending whether you install programs on the boot drive and how you manage your System Restore points - which can take up a lot of room)

So I would advise increasing your Ram and getting a bigger HD. With a bigger HD you can install the OS, programs, and data on different partitions.

Your CPU should be sufficient, as long as you don't go mad with the multi-tasking. However, perhaps someone else has experience to the contrary.

HTH

You can download this advisor to check out your system and software.
Two caveats; It is a large dwld about 31MB and if you set it to automatically update files it may cause some apps not to work properly. I had to run a scanreg restore after it "updated" my USB modem software.

I have XP running on a laptop with a P2, 10gig HD and 128 RAM, but it's main fucntion is for my 3 yr old son to play his learning games and to access the internet. I do have Office XP with only Word and Excel also installed on there and it works fine.

I use XP Home and when it is fully installed takes just over 2gigs of hard drive before I start eliminating all the junk Bil says I should have. I would recommend 256mb or better no matter what they say you can run it just runs smoother.

Windows XP will run with a 300mhz Proc. and 64 Mb of Ram.Also
had a 2.1G H/D.
It may be a little slow until you turn of some of the fancy stuff
but it will run.
I have a friend now thats running it on an HP PII 333mhz with
192 mgs of PC 100 and a 8.4G HD.......it runs fairly decently.

Buy yourself another stick of RAM, Tiger Direct has 256 MB for less than $25. Also Id get another hard drive and keep the one you already have. That way you could use one for programs and one for just your os. Or you could run one with Windows 98 and the other with XP. A used 10 gig hard drive can be found for almost nothing now.

There is a computer show that goes around towns all over the united states that lets you buy more gigs or another hd if you would prefer, for as much as 30$, My computer didnt have more that 62MB of ram, now i am + that, and I do need more, but not yet, but its good, if you need more room, just buy a new tower for like 200$ or something. hope this helped a little.

I just put XP on my friends P2 233 with 64 megs of ram and a 4 gig hard drive. If you know how to install and configure it properly, XP can run on just about anything. It runs just as fast as 98 did but with less problems. I reformated his HDD, installed XP and some parts ofOffice XP (Works, Excel) and he still has over 2 gigs left for games.
