Windows XP is superior to 98. I guess it would depend on whether or not you already have one OS or the other. If you haven't bought either, I would definitely go with XP. But if you already have 98 and you are wondering if you should ditch it for XP, it's more of a judgment call.

Since it's a new build, I assume that you have plenty of hardware to run XP handily - at least 500mhz and 256MB would be my personal minimum for XP-pro.

XP is more stable than 98, so I highly recommend XP over 98.

It's like doctorgonzo said. Judgement call. I have both and prefer XP. If you don't have XP and need to buy it......., well is it worth the money? Only you can answer that.

I'd go with XP. Its much more robust than 98 for not much difference in cost. ( Assuming you don't already have 98). XP will actually handle your memory much better than 98 ever did. The multitasking is also much mor transparent to the user in XP. It's all up to you though.

With that spec, I'd go for XP also.

BTW, Windows 98 doesn't support more than 512MB of RAM, so if you are going to add more memory later, you need Windows XP.

AYM it has to do with setting vcache. I've never done it and cain't tell you how, but if you want to add more than 512, do a search on these forums for vcache.

I'd second everyone's vote for Windows XP. When I did my second build I had all sorts of driver issues in Windows 98. I decided to buy XP and cleared everything up in a snap! Liked it so much I bought another copy to upgrade my first build

Another point in the decision is the fact that if you really like the 98 look, you can have XP display that 'feel' instead of the XP,
You will like the stability of XP, have about a year now since my install and have had four lock ups in the same period, two were from a bum install of photoshop (reinstall fixed that), and the others were my fault (tinkering with settings/registry etc) - fixed with restore points. One thing to do after install is reset the system restore, internet exlorer, and recycle bin limits. With the size of hard drives today the defaults can eat up a lot of space needlessly Another is take advantage of the password reset disk option, if you ever forget the admin password you are in a world of hurt. |
